Manawatu - Whanganui is where the North Island begins to feel like you’ve entered another world. The most well known part is Tongariro, New Zealand’s first national park. Home to towering volcanoes and a mars like landscape, it’s no wonder that Peter Jackson chose it to represent Mount Doom and Mordor.
Just beyond, you’ll find Whanganui, an area where the lush greenery you associate with Aotearoa returns alongside the stunning river, home to one of New Zealand’s 10 Great Walks.
Quick Summary
Top Tip: If you’re planning on doing the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, pick a clear weather day with low winds. The ridge at Red Crater is incredibly exposed and a clear, windless day will make the hike much more enjoyable.
When to go: The region is mild all year round except for Tongariro National Park. This area is susceptible to snow and ice in the winter, so you will want to check the conditions if you are visiting during the colder months. When we visited in winter, the majority of the trails were ice free and in great condition, but the crossing still require proper winter gear.
